Reading

"All the secrets of the world are contained in books.  Read at your own risk."  Lemony Snicket

At St Pius X, reading is at the heart of everything we do, we know that to be the best we can be, we need to be the best readers we can be!

We do this in lots of ways........

In Key Stage 1 we teach reading 'phonetically'  based on the synthetics phonics 'Letters and Sounds' programme.

If you would like additional help with phonics at home please click on the link below.   We recommend the 'Phonicsplay' site - your child will certainly recognise it from school!

Throughout the school we use 'book banding'.  This allows us to use many different schemes as well as texts from new and old, exciting and relevant authors, ensuring that your child experiences a vast wealth of authors and genres.  In doing this we provide enjoyment, cross curriculular learning as well as learning the skills of reading.

Book banding also allows children to control their own reading targets as they strive to reach the next colour band and unlock a whole new library of richer texts.
