Speaking & Listening

At St Pius X, we believe the ability to speak eloquently, articulate ideas and thoughts, collaborate with peers and have the confidence to express views are vital to be successful in learning and life in general.

Our aim in spoken language is to provide a sound foundation for the development of oracy skills from debate to poetry, and verbal feedback to talk for presentational purposes. Our classrooms are rich in talk, from effective questioning to constructive peer discussions. We are committed to developing and refining our children’s vocabulary so that they can communicate in the most effective ways possible.

Inclusion is at the heart of our oracy intention and all children are given the support and opportunities they need to thrive in this subject.

By embedding oracy in all aspects of the school’s culture and weaving it through the curriculum, we create an environment where our classrooms and playgrounds are filled with purposeful talk.

We have planned a progressive pathway of speaking and listening knowledge and skills which enable the children ro be ready for the next stage of their lives.

Speaking and Listening in Action

From EYFS to Year 6, all our children are regularly given the opportunity to take part in oracy activities such as class assemblies, child led prayer and liturgy, performance poetry, school plays, paired talk, story time, and even speaking to governors.

Please take a look at our children participating in speaking and listening below.
