Working Parties/Designated Governors
In addition to the Local Governing Body meetings, we have designated governors and working parties.
Having recently joined the Mater Christi Multi Academy Trust during this academic year, we are in the process of aligning the working of the governing body to the procedures of the Trust. As a result, the only two standing committees are the Pay Review Committee and the Head Teacher Appraisal Committee.
If a committee or working party is required for any other reason, it will be formed at a meeting of the full governing body, for a specific function or period of time.
In order to ensure appropriate governor oversight of our schools, each governor is designated to a specific curriulum or role and will visit school in that capacity to discuss standards, operation and good practice with the appropriate staff member before reporting back to the local governing body.

What is the role of the Local Governing Body?
The role of the Local Governing Body is strategic; its key functions are to:
- Set the aims and objectives for the school
- Set the policies for achieving those aims and objectives
- Set the targets for achieving those aims and objectives
- Monitor and evaluate the progress the school is making towards achievement of its aims and objectives
- Be a source of challenge and support to the headteacher. The headteacher is responsible for the internal organisation, day to day management and control of the school and the implementation of the strategic framework established by the governing body.
What do Governors do?
School governors provide strategic leadership and accountability in schools. The governing body supports the head and staff by positively promoting the work of the school, celebrating its achievements, and working to ensure the best outcomes for the pupils. Governors appoint the Headteacher and are involved in the appointment of other staff. Governors hold the main responsibility for finance in schools, and ask questions to check the performance of the school. Working with the head teacher, governors make the tough decisions about balancing resources.
Each individual governor is a member of a governing body, which is established in law as a corporate body. Individual governors do not act independently of the rest of the governing body. Decisions are the joint responsibility of the governing body. As long as they act within the law, governors are protected from any financial liability for the decisions they take.
The Governing Body has many statutory duties in ensuring that pupils receive the best education possible. They have to decide on an effective framework (aims, plans and policies) which will enable the Headteacher to manage the school and staff to carry out their duties.
At St Pius X we do our best to fulfil our roles as Governors. Meetings are very well attended and everyone participates in discussions etc. Where possible Governors attend school events and support the school by assisting on projects when asked. The structure of the membership ensures there are strong links with the parish and the wider community.
The Full Governing Body and each committee has its own Terms of Reference which the Governors adhere to and review annually.
The governor body is committed to upholding the Catholic Ethos of our school and providing a safe and happy place for the pupils of St Pius X, where they can achieve their potential.
