Welcome to Reception
Spring 2026
We’ve had a fantastic spring term in Reception, full of exciting learning and new experiences. As part of our work around the story What the Ladybird Heard, we enjoyed a wonderful trip to Greenlands Farm, where the children learned how to feed a lamb and discovered lots of different animals that live on a farm. In Design and Technology, we have been busy making vegetable soup—the children practised their cutting skills and took part in a soup tasting to decide their favourite, with tomato soup coming out on top! Towards the end of term, we explored different animals and their habitats, and we were very lucky to welcome Cumbria Pet Encounters for a special visit. The children showed great bravery and curiosity as they held a snake and met an armadillo. What an exciting and memorable term it has been!
Autumn 2025
Our Reception children have had a fantastic first term at school, settling confidently into their new environment. They have formed positive relationships with their teachers and built strong friendships with their classmates, creating a happy and supportive classroom community.
Throughout the term, the children have enjoyed a wide range of hands-on, practical learning experiences. From exploring ice during the colder weather to discovering more about the world around them, their curiosity and enthusiasm have been wonderful to see.
A particular highlight was our exciting trip to Grizedale Forest, where the children took part in the Gruffalo Trail. This outdoor adventure brought their Guided Reading text to life and gave them the opportunity to explore and learn in a natural setting.
To round off a busy and successful term, the children proudly took part in our school Nativity, showcasing their confidence and teamwork. We also enjoyed a special visit from Mrs Boylan and her young son, which supported our learning about how we grow and change.
We are incredibly proud of how well the children have adapted to school life and look forward to another exciting term ahead.
Summer 2025
During our final summer term in Reception, we had a wonderful time learning all about life under the sea and exploring places around the world. We enjoyed diving into poetry with Monkey Babies and Five Little Owls, using our imaginations to bring the words to life through songs, actions, and creative activities. The children also took part in lots of fun transition activities to help them feel ready and excited for their move up to Year 1. We finished the year with a fantastic trip to Greenlands Farm, where the children had the chance to meet the animals and enjoy some hands-on experiences. It has been a fantastic term full of learning, laughter, and new adventures!
Spring 2025
Autumn 2024
We have had a great first term in our new Reception class. We have spent our first term getting to know our classrooms, teachers and routines. We had our first school trips of the year when we went to Barrow Library and then to Brockhole on Windermere. At Barrow Library we did a Julia Donaldson themed story time and at Brockhole we learnt more about woodland habitats, linking to our Guided reading text 'The Gruffalo'. We have done lots of outdoor learning this half term and have really enjoyed exploring our outdoor area, whatever the weather! We finished Autumn Term with our school Nativity Play that we performed for all of our family and friends.
We have had a great start to our time in Reception and are looking forward to continuing our learning after Christmas.
Autumn 2023
Autumn 2 is a very busy half term. We've had a nativity, the pantomime, party day, mass and so much more!
We spent a lot of time this half term rehearsing for our big performance of 'Away in a Manger'. The children blew the audience away with their fantastic singing and acting. All the children were amazing! They got up on stage and said their lines with confidence. I was very proud of them all.
We loved our trip to the Pantomime to see Jack and the Beanstalk, oh yes we did! We booed, cheered and laughed all the way through.
In the last week of term we joined the rest of the school for an end of term Mass. We were excited to show the rest of the school how peacefully we say our prayers and how good we're getting at making the sign of the cross. We've been practising a lot since starting Reception learning our school prayers four times a day.
The children have made great progress in the Autumn term and we're excited to see what we will get up to in the Spring!
