Welcome to Year 2

Spring Term 2026

This term, we have enjoyed a wide range of exciting and enriching learning experiences across the curriculum. During our Geography unit, we explored Rydal Caves and experienced the outdoors first-hand—even getting a little wet along the way! This trip helped us to develop our understanding of physical landscapes and encouraged curiosity about the natural world.

In Design and Technology, we developed our practical skills by designing and making our own bags. The children showed great creativity and resilience, carefully selecting materials and evaluating their finished products. "I enjoyed stitching my bag together and had to be careful when using the hot glue gun!"

Some of our Year 2 children proudly took part in a gymnastics competition, where they demonstrated determination, confidence and resilience, trying their very best and supporting one another. We also had a fantastic time celebrating World Book Day, embracing our love of reading through a range of fun and engaging activities.

In Writing, we produced a detailed recount of our memorable trip to the Lake District, focusing on sequencing events, using descriptive language and writing for a clear purpose. The children worked hard to include time adverbials and expanded noun phrases to bring their experiences to life.

In Music, we performed “I Want to Play in a Band” with great enthusiasm, using expressive voices and developing our confidence in performing in front of others. "I loved perfoming and using the Glockenspiel with my friend"! In Maths, we have been developing our understanding of length and height through practical, hands-on activities, comparing, measuring and applying our knowledge to solve problems.

Across all areas of learning, the children have shown a positive attitude, a willingness to challenge themselves and pride in their work. It has been wonderful to see their confidence grow as they continue to develop both academically and personally.

Autumn Term 2025

We have settled into Year 2 really well and are proud of how confidently the children have adapted to new routines and expectations.

This term included many exciting learning experiences. One of the highlights was our school trip to Liverpool, where we visited Imagine That and the World Museum. The children enjoyed exploring, role-playing and taking part in hands-on activities. In Religious Education, we visited church to watch a mock baptism, helping the children understand the Sacrament of Baptism. "I felt very proud standing by the font and watching my baby be baptised".

We welcomed family members and other important people into school to share family member biographies in our writing lessons, helping to develop the children’s speaking and listening skills and celebrate our Gospel Value of Family. In Design and Technology, we designed, made and evaluated fruit and vegetable kebabs, practicing safe cutting skills and learning about healthy food choices.

In Geography, we learned about what it is like to live in hot and cold places, and in History we explored what schools were like in the past. We also enjoyed preparing for Christmas, with the children narrating the Nativity—every child shone and showed great confidence. "My favourite song was Little Blue Star. I could see my mummy watching me and I felt so excited".

It has been a busy and enjoyable term, and we are very proud of all the children’s hard work and achievements. We can't wait to see what the Spring Term brings!

Summer Term 2025

We’ve had a fantastic final term in Year 2.

We have been very busy with our summer activities, including Sports' Day, Pius Calling and performing in the 'Year 6 and Friends' leavers' performance. During swimming lessons, we have improved our confidence in the water - we even jumped in with our pyjamas on during Water Safety Week!

In design and technology, we have research, designed, made and evaluated our own toy vehicles, which we were very proud of! We have also been getting creative in our art lessons, where we have been modelling with clay and made our own clay houses.

We have been very busy and are ready for our next chapter in Year 3!

Spring Term 2025

What a busy term we have had! It began in January when we started learning about the wonderful places in our world and, to support our learning, we visited a very popular landmark very close to us - the Lake District! We went on a long walk from Grasmere to Rydal Caves and had lots of fun along the way, even though it was very challenging!

We also celebrated World Book Day and came dressed in something from our Earth, to match the theme of our whole school book, ‘Here We Are’ by Oliver Jeffers. In our writing, we produced letters to a new person coming to our Earth, explaining all of our favourite parts. In reading and writing lessons, we have started using the talking telephones to help us to hear our own sentences or to hear what we are reading out loud. Our wonderful writing even led some children to ‘Go for Gold!’ Mr M was very impressed with their writing.

In design and technology, we have been very busy with needles and thread as we worked hard to design, make and evaluate our own bags. We couldn’t wait to take them home and use them!

This term, we have also been preparing for Easter by learning all about the events during Holy Week. We performed in our annual Rotary Event, where we were gifted a little crochet chick, with a yummy Crème Egg inside.

Overall, it has been a wonderful term in Year 2. We are looking forward to a well-deserved rest before our final term of Year 2.

Autumn Term 2024

We have settled into our first term of Year 2 so well and have been super busy! This has included visits to our local parish, St Mary’s, to learn about baptism with Father Manny, trips to the library, improving our gymnastics skills in PE by showing fantastic balances and taking part in Parliament Week, making our own manifestos and voting for our favourite ones.

We also went on an amazing school trip to Liverpool. We had such a fun-filled day exploring, slime making, snow making and role playing at Imagine That and then visiting the World Museum.
In history, we have been learning about schools in the past. We invited Mrs Steele and Mrs Hurley into our classroom to talk to us all about what St Pius X was like when it first opened in 1974. We really enjoyed looking at the old photo albums of our school.

In design and technology, we have designed, made and evaluated fruit and vegetable kebabs, which were ‘amazing’ and ‘perfect’. We practised cutting skills and discussed how we can prepare our fruit and vegetable kebab safely.

This term, we have also had the excitement of preparing for Christmas! We have been learning all about the Christmas Story and have even narrated the infant Nativity this year.

We are ready for our Christmas break after a very busy first term in Year 2!

Spring Term 2024

What an exciting half term we have had! We have had an excellent half term going on trips. We visited Liverpool on the coach and spent the full day with Eureka in their Interactive Science Museum and exploring the World Museum. At Eureka we were lead on a guided tour through their interactive zones. We took part in activities that covered: The body, Nature, Home and construction.

The World Museum was equally as wonderful. We explored their: aquarium, ancient Egypt and their natural world. It was fascinating to see real life mummies and develop our understanding of the mummification process.

Autumn 2 2023

Our final half term of the calendar year! This term we have been very hands on and practical. We have been building up to our Nativity with weekly practices and we were also lucky enough to have a snow day! We had an amazing time outside marking snowmen and having snowball fights.
we also made a healthy snack for break time within our DT lessons. We made fruit kebabs from scratch. Choosing, cleaning and cutting our own fruit and veg.

Autumn 1 2023

The first half term of the new academic year!

The children have settled in brilliantly and we have made a great start to the year. This half term we have had Barrow Community Sports in teaching us some multi-skills during our PE lessons. We also had lots of fun creating our class Gospel values poster and finally we have enjoyed listening to, playing and composing musical beats using the glockenspiels!
