Outdoor Learning

“The best kept classroom and the richest cupboard are roofed only by the sky” - Margaret McMillan (c1925)

Our outdoor area provides our youngest children with one of the best possible environments in which to learn with a range of open ended resources.  In our EYFS, children have the opportunity to free flow between the classroom and the large outside area. When children choose to play outside, it is clear to see the joy and excitement they experience as they learn new skills and make fresh discoveries.

We provide these opportunities whatever the weather as we understand that children benefit from outside learning in the sun, rain, hail and snow. At St Pius X, we believe outdoors is an equal player to indoors and should receive planning, management, evaluation, resourcing, staffing and adult interaction on a par with indoors.

Through the week children from Nursery and Reception have time in our wildlife area, which contains only natural resources for learning. Our children thrive in this environment and the learning opportunities are plentiful. The open ended natural resources allow imaginations to thrive and learning opportunities are plentiful .
