Reading Scheme

Across the  Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and Key Stage 1, our reading scheme is decodable and fully aligned to the validated systematic synthetic phonics scheme, Essential Letters and Sounds (ELS).  

The expectation is that children are to read each book three times, before it is changed, in order to promote reading fluency and consolidate blending of taught sounds.

We have created a central space (see photo below) for our phonics reading scheme.  Sounds are displayed in the area, which can be referred to.

From Years 2 (once phase 5 secure) to Year 6 we use a combination of book banding and free readers to promote fluency and encourage reading for pleasure. Our central library consists of texts from a range of quality authors and genres, including non-fiction, fiction, graphic novels and poetry. We use pupil voice to help us to decide which areas of the library we would like more books for each year. The children are encouraged to read the blurb to decide if the book interests them and then complete a '5 finger check' to see if a book is suitable for their reading ability.

In addition to reading scheme books mentioned above, our pupils are able to choose a book from the school library. This is to ensure our pupils foster a love of reading.
